Symptoms

  • Mild blurring of vision.
  • Slightly distorted vision, where straight lines look bent or wavy.
  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare.
  • Eye redness or swelling.

Causes

  • The corneal tissue that leads to keratoconus may be due to an imbalance of enzymes within the cornea.
  • This imbalance makes the cornea more susceptible to oxidative damage from compounds called free radicals, causing it to weaken and bulge forward.

Intacs corneal inserts or implants are a minimally invasive surgical option used primarily for the treatment of keratoconus.

 

DIAGNOSIS:

The doctor must measure the curvature of the cornea.

Several different tests can be performed to make the diagnosis.

Topography measures the curvature of the surface of the eye and creates a colored “map” of the cornea
