Inguinal Hernia

Wildlife

Symptoms

  • A bulge in the area on either side of your pubic bone, which becomes more obvious when you're upright, especially if you cough or strain
  • A burning or aching sensation at the bulge
  • Pain or discomfort in your groin, especially when bending over, coughing or liftingA heavy or dragging sensation in your groin
  • Weakness or pressure in your groin
  • Occasionally, pain and swelling around the testicles when the protruding intestine descends into the scrotum

Causes

Hernias are caused by a combination of pressure and an opening or weakness of muscle or fascia; the pressure pushes an organ or tissue through the opening or weak spot. Sometimes the muscle weakness is present at birth; more often, it occurs later in life.

Anything that causes an increase in pressure in the abdomen can cause a hernia, including:

Improperly lifting heavy objects without stabilizing the abdominal muscles
Diarrhea or constipation

Persistent coughing or sneezing

In addition, obesity, poor nutrition, and smoking, can all weaken muscles and make hernias more likely.

More about Treatment

What is Inguinal Hernia?

When any tissue like a part of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles, then Inguinal Hernia is said to occur.

What is its effect?

While Hernia by itself is not life threatening, it can lead to life threatening consequences. The bulge can be painful especially when you cough, bend over or lift heavy objects.

Diagnosis.

Normally a phycial examination reveals this condition. If this is not apparent, a MRI or CT scan or abdominal ultrasound may be recommended by a Doctor.

Treatment for Inguinal Hernia

When it is small and not hurting you, doctor may adopt a wait and watch.

When it enlarges, doctors usually recommend surgery.

Types of surgery?

Open hernia surgery and laparoscopic are normally done, in recent days the latter is usually done.

In open hernia surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the groin and pushes the protruding tissue back into the abdomen. The surgeon then sews the weakened area, by reinforcing it with a synthetic mesh. Laparoscopic is usually a minimally invasive surgery and leaves less scars and heals much faster.

After surgery care?

Normally recovery is very fast, with potential for complications very minimal. You are advised not to lift heavy objects, or cough violently
