  • Rapid breathing or shortness of breath.
  • Rapid heartbeat or pounding heart.
  • Poor suckling and feeding.
  • cold extremities (poor perfusion)
  • blue color of the skin, lips and nailbeds (cyanosis)
  • weakness

Causes

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs during fetal growth when the baby's heart is developing. The cause is unknown. However, if your family has one child with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the risk of having another with a similar condition is increased.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.

 

DIAGNOSIS

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome can be diagnosed with an ultrasound while the baby is still in the womb (uterus).

You may notice that your baby seems limp or listless, has trouble breathing, or has a blue color to their skin, lips, or nails
