Causes
UTIs typically occur when bacteria outside the body enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply. Most cases of cystitis are caused by a type of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Bacterial bladder infections may occur in women as a result of sexual intercourse.

Bladder instillation is a combination drug therapy to help painful bladder or cystitis type symptoms including frequency, urgency, burning pain or stinging sensations when passing urine. It works by reducing inflammation and discomfort within the bladder.

Why is this treatment done?
Bladder Instillation is done to treat urinary symptoms causing pain and discomfort mainly due to Interstitial Cystitis or sometimes Tumor or non infective inflammation.It is done by administriting drug or combination of drugs via catheter passed into the bladder.
How is Bladder Instillation done?
It is done only after ruling out UTIs.You will be asked to give Urine sample for culture to rule out infection. Groin area will be disinfected and a small catheter lubricated with local anaesthetic like Lignocaine is inserted into Urethra. Urine in the bladder is drained then only medications will be infused over catheter. This solution is generally kept for 15-90 min and the patient is asked not to pass urine during this period.
How long is recovery after this treatment?
Generally one instillation is done per week. Patient can feel better after 4-5 instillations in case of mild or moderate Interstitial Cystitis. Chronicity increases the number of instillations. In some cases prophylactic instillation may be required after treatment.
How many days of hospitalisation is required after this treatment?
This is OPD based treatment so no hospitalisation is required.
What are the precautions that I have to follow after this treatment?
As Interstitial Cystitis is most important indication for bladder instillation so factors triggering this should be avoided and precautions are as follows:
-Spicy food, Alcohol should be avoided
-Drinking water to dilute urine.
-One can do Physical exercises.
What is Interstitial Cystitis?
It is a chronic inflammatory condition causing symptoms like increased urinary frequency and urgency, Feeling of incomplete voiding,lower abdominal pain. It is more common in females and it is very necessary to differentiate from UTIs.
